Carpets have the incredible ability to filter the air in our homes as long as they are well maintained. That means regular vacuuming, and having the carpets cleaned professionally every 6 months or so. The health benefits are entirely worth it, but cutting corners can have the reverse effect on our health.
The Dangers of Cheap Carpet Cleaning
The steam cleaning machines that are rented out by hardware stores seem like a great way to maintain the home, and save a few dollars in the short term. We’ve already touched on carpet cleaning rentals being lower quality in general, but we never touched on the more serious side effects of using a low quality steam cleaner.
If you are steam cleaning your carpets, you need to make sure that the cleaner you use has the adequate suction to remove enough of the moisture. If your carpets cannot dry out in an 18 hour period, you risk damaging the carpets and underlay. At best, a low temperature, low suction steam cleaning will only result in your carpets getting dirty faster. At worst, you can encourage mould growth. Essentially, this is like introducing flood damage to your floors, and paying for it.
