It has been told to us time and time again how important it is to be environmentally conscious and friendly. Some of us have a green thumb when it comes to plants and gardens; others have a gift of being able to cut down on their ecological footprint, without feeling as though they have disrupted their entire lives. They can probably tell you a few eco carpet cleaning tips, tricks on lowering your hydro bill, and even how to calculate your footprint so that you know how much you need to reduce.
At this point, some of you may be asking what an ecological footprint really is. It is the measure of human demand on the Earth taken in contrast with the Earth’s ability to regenerate. This measure could be based on an individual, a town, country, or the whole planet. (If you have ever seen or heard of that television series called “Under the Dome” you can get a sense of what this means – those in that town can only provide for themselves within that given space!). In essence, one’s ecological footprint is a measure of sustainability.
Did you know: the populations of fish, birds, mammals, and other wildlife have dropped by over 50% in 40 years? Moreover, our demand on the planet is over 50% larger than what is sustainable. Canadians are currently using the equivalent of 1.5 planets based on our country’s size and population. However, if the entire population of earth lived as we do, we would need 3.7 plants to survive! Despite this surprising statistic, Canada’s ecological footprint is peanuts compared to other countries!
So how can you start to live more sustainably and eco-friendly? You could drink from a tap instead of buying bottled water, eat less packaged foods, bring your own bags to the grocery store, and buy less stuff overall. You could also start carpooling, walking, biking, or taking the bus more, and even bring your own coffee mug to work to save on disposable cups. In fact, more than 1.6 billion disposable coffee cups are thrown away in Canada each year!
