The Lifespan of a Carpet

We last talked about the lifespan of the mattress. Typically, a mattress can last for much longer than the suggested lifespan, but the biggest issue revolved around cleanliness. Mattresses can be hard to keep clean. Of course, we address that in the previous post, so be sure to read about it if you missed out. Most carpets are built with varying levels of durability. This can depend on material the carpet is made from, or on how the carpet is woven, but three key areas of maintenance have a 100% chance to improve the lifespan of your carpet.

Vacuuming

Dirt, pet dander, and other bits of debris can be hard on carpet. The more people there are in your household, the easier it is for your carpet to pick up soil from foot traffic. You will not have to vacuum every day to improve the lifespan of your carpet, but if you keep a regular weekly schedule of vacuuming, you would be amazed how well that will improve the durability of any carpet flooring. It is important to maintain this regular schedule, as the goal is to catch dirt, sand, and other elements before the drift lower into the carpet fibers. Dirt and sand that drifts deeply will actually damage your carpet in time, even if you vacuum over it some weeks later.A good rule of thumb is to vacuum once a week, plus once for every member of the household. So, 2.5 times a week for you, your spouse and a toddler.

Spills and Spots

Catching spills and spots from pet accidents before staining is obviously a large part of keeping your carpet healthy. A fast reaction to spills will drastically improve your carpets life. When dealing with a liquid spill, it's important to remember to dab and blot, rather than rub the spill. Carpet cleaners can be selected at your personal preference, but it is always good to read the label and follow instructions before applying a chemical cleaner to your carpet.Ask one of our helpful agents about our spot removal guide, and our environmentally friendly carpet cleaning products.

Professional Carpet Cleaning

Every 6 months or so, it is a good idea to make an appointment with a professional carpet cleaner. The equipment they use will be able to gather a large portion of the dirt, sand, and soil that has drifted down to the root of the carpet fibres. Regular cleaning like this is will not only improve the life of your carpet in general, but it may keep your carpets warranty intact. Many carpet manufacturers specify regular periodic steam cleaning as a part of the expected maintenance. Without it, their guarantee is null and void.
